Applying UX to my Barbering Business

Applying UX methods to my barbering business to increase revenue, identify new services, and optimize business hours

Project Overview

How do I make this business "better"?

It was a question I tried to answer throughout my 3 years of running a barbering business.

I found the most dramatic results when I applied UX methods to my business.

Business Objectives

  • Increased revenue
  • Reduced gaps during business hours
  • Improved experience for clients

Client Needs

To identify this, I conducted surveys and interviews.

Results

After conducting user research to implement the right business decisions,

  • Increased revenue by 2.4x
  • Optimized business hours to better serve clients while minimizing gaps
  • Identified and implemented new services for additional user groups

How did we achieve these results?

Research

Insights

Client Demographic: Mostly 3rd Year Students

Most clients discovered my business through referrals

Preferred Business Hours: Weekends and Weekday Evenings

New Services: Off Hour Haircuts

Some clients were willing to pay a higher price for haircuts outside of business hours.
They preferred Off Hour Haircuts over "On The Go" Haircuts where I would meet them at their dorm.

100% of clients rate the quality of haircuts with a 4/5 or greater

79% rated 5/5
21% rated 4/5
This lets me know to the haircuts are satisfactory, and I can focus my efforts elsewhere to reach my business goals

83% of clients rate the booking system 4/5 or greater

This lets me know that the booking system is effective, and I can focus my efforts elsewhere to reach my business goals.

Business Changes

Facebook Marketing and Social Proof

Knowing that most of my clients are 3rd years from word of mouth marketing, I turned towards another marketing stream to attract new client groups. I leveraged positive quantitative and qualitative feedback from my surveys for marketing content. My current clients also commented their positive experience to establish trust with new clients. Talk about social proof.

Setting Optimal Business Hours

I no longer had 2 hour gaps in my schedule and was able to reduce 4 days of business hours to 2 days while generating more revenue.

Introducing a New Service: Off Hour Haircuts

Summary

This project was an eye opening experience.

My existing clients loved the changes and my new clients told me they wished they found me earlier.

I had first hand experience with the effectiveness of design which furthered my aspirations as an entrepreneur, barber, and designer.

2 years later, I did similar work conducting Service Design at Accenture.
